ViaZone - Mobile Traffic Management System



Motorway and express road reconstruction and modernization is a complex process in all countries. At the places where there are temporary restrictions due to road reconstruction or modernization, aspects concerning safe and trouble-free traffic are important. On the basis of conducted studies, factors which generate travel delays can be identified, which are often the cause of accidents at the sites where roads are narrowed. These are in particular:

  • incorrect use of the "zip merging" principle,
  • over-speeding,
  • failure to meet proper distances between cars,
  • low tolerance and ignoring other road users.

The irritability and ignorance of drivers also play an important role in the formation of jams, reduce the service quality and cause economic losses. One of the tools to eliminate traffic restrictions and their negative impact is the use of mobile telematics systems. To prevent the abovementioned hazards, we have designed a mobile traffic control system for road work zones, ViaZone, which harmonizes traffic flow in their area. Using commonly available information as well as by tests conducted in the field, we have proven its profitability.

The ViaZone system consists of cooperating component parts that are adapted to the requirements for mobile systems. The main feature of these components is their modularity, mobility, minimum requirements concerning their installation, calibration and maintenance, economical operation, and independent power supply.

THE POSSIBILITY OF MOVEMENT - easy to transfer and install in a particular location, in a short time, at minimum risk for the installing personnel. The system does not require complicated calibration, installation, and configuration.

SUBSYSTEMS - it may be combined with other elements via wireless, safe VPN network. All the elements share data from the central server, which controls complex management of the system, and is ready to be managed remotely by its operator.

FLEXIBLE APPLICATION - the software is prepared for various operational scenarios, depending on the place of their installation and/or a Client's needs. The designed functions of the system include in particular dynamic lane combining (zip merging), maximum speed, adjustment, planning alternative detour routes or warnings about queues.

MODULARITY - "logically" designed. The control unit (e-CON) is ready to be connected to any ITS device. The e-CON controller has practically all interfaces present on the market. Road radars, IP cameras, weather stations, wireless modems or VMS variable content signs may be connected to it.


The complete system is a set of hardware and software tools to affect drivers' behaviour by means of VMS variable message signs. Our unique algorithms display real-time pictograms and messages on the VMS road signs, based on processed input data from different detectors that are installed in several pre-defined zones in a given road area. The data analysis and system remote control software make automatic operation possible.


The most crucial issue is to ensure the most accurate determination of road traffic by using non-invasive measurement technologies. Other requirements depend more on the specific application. We must require modularity and ease of expansion, simple operation, and power efficiency with respect to the expected implementation. The system connects different types of sensors that are compatible with all the components. The detectors at the installation site of the system may be freely combined, depending on the end user's requirements, and according to the needs at a given sit.

The e-CON device with very low power consumption has been created for the needs of a mobile system. The e-CON is a way, regardless of what specific detection or presentation layer technology is used, for relatively easy integration of various extensive complexes. The module is mainly intended for mutual communication with other modules of the same type, and with the central server module to which it provides data for further processing by its software. We have designed the e-CON controller as the heart of an integrated traffic management system, which, as opposed to competitive solutions, makes it possible to access all the necessary interfaces and to change any VMS sign into SMART VMS.

The software layer is represented, above all, by uniquely developed system, which is a combination of a database and GUI. The software is based on WWW with access through a user name and password. The system analyses data delivered by individual units (e-CON) and responds to a given situation by means of commands for the integrated units. In the automatic mode, the CENTRAL SERVER cooperates with the built-in /configured algorithms of the pre-defined reactions to changes in traffic. This changes messages and pictograms on the LED panels of VMS boards. The dispatcher personnel can also intervene in the automatic mode. By switching into the manual control mode, it is possible to change the content of all road signs. The configuration module in the software sets the size and length of any work zone, including the number of its traffic lanes, the locations of particular stations, any speed changes on particular kilometres, and sequential activation of VMS signs and other system functions. And it sets the threshold values of the system, at which the system's alarm states are activated.



THE AUTOMATIC MODE, when it reacts to situations on the basis of the integrated algorithms. THE MANUAL MODE, when the answer to arising events only depends on the operator.

CONFIGURATION The units are assigned to specified position. The e-CON devices and the VMS signs for one work zone form one group, which is created on a specified virtual site (work zone) in the management software.


The system is able to warn the operator with automatic alarm when the threshold values of any selected variables are exceeded. These values may be: traffic speed in the zone, battery charge level, attempted break-in to the system, or errors of any device in the system.

ACCESS Access to the software is protected by a login and password. Each name has special role (Administrator, Control, Dispatcher, User).

The supervision module for traffic monitoring

The software switches to situation monitoring in real time, at the place where the system components are located, after the end of their configuration and activation. The user has the possibility to monitor the following variables, represented both numerically and graphically, in particular road profiles or in cartographic form:

• traffic flow, average speed, occupancy of lanes and vehicle class on particular lanes,

• delays in monitored sections at the site of road works or in particular road profiles,

• traffic situation in profiles distinguished with a colour,

• currently displayed pictograms and messages on the LED panels with possible manual changes

• power situation in all installed components

• the status of all the devices connected and of the communication network

• historical data from analysis of all connected sensors

• list of all work zones along with road traffic status

• current view if IP cameras are installed

• registers of all operations in the system

• and much more...


The variable message road signs are autonomous elements of the overall system. It is possible to integrate approved road signs of different dimensions and types from different suppliers. The VMS signs are designed for fast and easy installation. Especially the installation in a median strip requires the maximum time efficiency. Our goal is to install a movable VMS board within a time shorter than 30 minutes after arriving, along with testing its integration with the system. The displays are always installed according to the national regulations and technical requirements. It is possible to install all VMS beyond the width of a road, and even in the median strip (portable VMS). In both cases, the installation requires a different approach, consistent with respective regulations. The whole system is ready to check the status of all the LED components, power on /off, fluid levels, and even the protections against theft.


These are portable variable message signs that display traffic information. Easy to install at the site of road works beyond the left or to the right edge of the available road width. The devices conform to valid standards and are able to display a traffic sign and additional warning light, when required. These signs can be mounted on a protective barrier or on dedicated stand.


It is used as a substitute of a mobile initial warning device made of metal, and is intended first of all for short-term closures. It may be used as a VMS at long-term closures, subject to meeting certain requirements. It may display warning signs, order and ban signs, and informational signs. Both top and bottom panel are equipped with highly visible LEDs and an optical system, which eliminates their darkening and dirt.


A trailer with an embedded LED panel, which displays updated data relating to traffic safety and flow. The lighting surface displays text messages and symbols. It is designed to notify drivers about the situation on roads, traffic accidents, travel time /delays, etc.


It is similar to the aforementioned trailers, but with additionally raised LED display. It is an ideal solution for motorways and two-roadway roads with high traffic intensity of coaches and trucks. The top of the VMS sign, because of its height (approx. 7m), is visible for drivers, unobscured by trucks and coaches.


ViaZone does not depend on mains power. It can be powered with batteries, solar panels, fuel cells or generators. Independence from mains power - particular elements are designed to be connected and serve as a source of power:

• independent batteries with a charging station

• fuel cells

• diesel generators

• photovoltaic cells

For the needs of the mobile systems, a control cabinet has been developed, which enables transfer of power from the above mentioned power sources. The device enables automatic power reduction (or eventually its disconnection) in some branches of the system, protecting the batteries against total discharging/destruction.
