Tychy – Environmental Monitoring in ITS
Project Background
Tychy, a major city in southern Poland, launched a Smart Transportation initiative to improve traffic control and environmental safety. A key objective was to introduce a network of monitoring stations to track air quality, noise, and weather in real time.

Project Overview
As part of the ITS project, a comprehensive environmental monitoring network was deployed. The main contractor was Yunex Traffic Poland (formerly Siemens Mobility), with Far Data supplying the measurement stations.
Far Data system included:
- Weather monitoring stations placed at key locations across the city to detect changing conditions and quickly respond to threats
- Air quality and noise monitoring stations: 7 units were installed to measure carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter
- Bluetooth detection network: 39 additional Bluetooth sensors were installed on selected road sections to analyze vehicle travel times and assess traffic flow efficiency
Environmental Impact Assessment
To evaluate the effectiveness of the ITS, the environmental monitoring system was installed as the project’s first active component. This allowed the city to establish a reliable baseline for pollutant levels before system optimization.
Measurement data from the stations—combined with approved modeling methodologies—supports analysis of reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, particulate matter, and other pollutants.
Far Data’s solution ensures this critical data is consistently available and ready to inform traffic and environmental strategies in real time.

Results
Comparative analysis of Far Data station results with those from a GIOŚ reference station confirmed the high accuracy of the environmental monitoring system.
The city of Tychy recorded several measurable benefits:
- Improved air quality through responsive emission control measures based on real-time data
- Noise reduction by identifying the most affected areas and applying mitigation strategies
- Enhanced road safety due to improved weather detection and traffic flow monitoring
- Traffic optimization by using Bluetooth data to manage vehicle flow and reduce congestion on major roads
