Tarnów – Environmental Monitoring in ITS Strategy
Project Background
In 2021, the City of Tarnów launched an environmental monitoring system within its ITS strategy. Delivered by Far Data, the project enables real-time analysis of air pollution and its correlation with road traffic.

Project Overview
As part of the implementation, three environmental monitoring stations were
installed to measure key air quality parameters, including:
- Particulate matter: PM₁, PM₂.₅, PM₁₀
- Gases: CO, CO₂, NO, NO₂, SO₂
- Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
In addition, the system was equipped with radar-based traffic monitoring to
analyze vehicle flow and assess its impact on pollutant levels.
Benefit of Implementation
- Improved Air Quality and Public Health
Real-time pollution data enables targeted anti-smog measures and
traffic control to reduce health risks. - Intelligent Traffic Management
Radar data supports dynamic traffic light adjustments and congestion
reduction based on pollution levels. - Forecasting and Crisis Prevention
The system helps identify emission trends and supports planning of
low-emission zones and sustainable mobility infrastructure. - Real-Time Public Information
Air quality updates are displayed via ITS boards and a mobile app,
helping residents make informed travel decisions. - Support for Sustainable Urban Mobility
Data analytics help the city plan for greener transport solutions, such
as electric buses and bike-sharing systems.

Conclusion
Tarnów’s integration of environmental monitoring into ITS showcases Smart City principles in practice. The system, delivered by Far Data, supports emission reduction, data-driven traffic management, and improved urban quality of life — serving as a model for sustainable city development.
